Abstract

The papers of Allison Morris Stickney document Stickney’s service on the U.S.S. Marion from 1876-1904, with the bulk of the records specifically documenting his experiences aboard the schooner and in varying ports located in the Mediterranean region. Corresponding port lists also document the schooner’s arrival and departures throughout the region.

Biographical History

Allison Morris Stickney (1847-1912) was born in Lowell, Massachusetts to Jonathon G. and Mary A. Stickney. He enlisted in the United States Army at the young age of 16, first with Company G, 1st Battalion from Altoona, Pennsylvania, and second with the Philadelphia Volunteer Militia.  Ten years later Stickney served on board the U.S.S. Marion with stops at a multitude of ports in the Mediterranean, including southern Europe, the Middle East and North Africa. After Stickney’s military service he worked in the manufacturing of rubber machinery and held several patents. Allison Morris Stickney died in Medford, Massachusetts February 13, 1912. The family would eventually relocate to Berlin, Maryland.
