The Albert and Bettie Morris papers document their lives as long-time residents of Salisbury, Maryland, and include early family records of Rosa Lee Tilghman Morris as well as correspondence, biographical information, printed materials, newspapers and artifacts. The materials date from 1895-2008 with the bulk of the material dating from 1941-1979. Dr. Morris’ extensive World War II service record is documented and includes correspondence, service papers and photographic documentation of his encounter with General Dwight D. Eisenhower. Also included are the records of the Eastern Shore Opera and Symphony Societies as well as ephemera from many other local historic and symphonic organizations.
Salisbury, Maryland natives, Dr. Albert W. Morris (1917-2008) and Bettie Harcum Morris (1917-2005) were married in 1942, while Dr. Morris served as a dentist in the United States Army Dental Corps during World War II. Dr. Albert and Bettie Morris were influential in the development of the arts in Salisbury, Maryland. They participated in a wide range of historic and symphonic organizations including the Pemberton Hall Foundation, Wicomico Historical Society, Eastern Shore Symphony Society and the Eastern Shore Opera Society.
Series I: Family History documents the social activities and education of the Harcum, Morris, and Kennerly families through correspondence, biographical histories, and composition books. The series is further subdivided into two subseries, Albert Morris World War II Service, and Organizations. Dr. Morris’ service in the Army Dental Corps is detailed via correspondence and military service records. Organizations document the extensive involvement of Mr. and Mrs. Morris in local historic, theatrical and symphonic societies through correspondence, programs, and administrative records.
Series II: Printed Materials series includes local ephemera such as programs, and postcards as well as monographs, sheet music, local and regional newspapers, and bound books.
The papers of Albert and Bettie Morris have been arranged into two series, FAMILY HISTORY, and PRINTED MATERIALS.
Folders are listed by their location in each box; any given subject may be dispersed throughout the entirety of the collection.
