Abstract

Mounted lithograph of the monument for the Thomas F. Williams who served in the William H. Watkins Regiment of the Eastern Shore Maryland Infantry Volunteers. The heavily ornamented monument, set in a serene park-like setting features a Columbia and History statuary along with statuary representing the Defense of the Stars and Strips as well as the United States Navy; also depicted are four reliefs of saying goodbye, patriotism, women's work, and the battlefield.

The item states: 

"To all whom it may concern. Know ye, that Thomas F. Williams a private of Captain William H. Watkins Regiment of E. S. MD. Infantry Volunteers who was enrolled on the 28 th day of September 1861 to serve three years, or during the war, is hereby discharged from the service of the United States this 23 rd day of December 1864 at Baltimore, MD by reason of expiration of term of service. [The objection to his living re-enlisted is known to exist] Said Thomas F. Williams was born in Dorchester Country in the state of MD is 23 years of age give feet 6 inches high dark complexion gray eye dark hair and by occupation when enrolled a farmer. Given at Baltimore, MD, this 23 day of Dec. 1864. [This sentence will be erased should there be anything in the conduct or physical condition of the soldier rendering him unfit for the Army] A. G. 0. Tho R. H. Offley. Capt. 1 st U. S. Infantry. Asst. Commander musters (8 th A.C.) Win H. Watkins. Capt Company G. 1st E. S. MD. Vols. This monument was dedicated to the Grand Army of the Republic and kindred societies in acknowledgement of what these organizations have done towards keeping alive the flame of patriotism, which brought victory to the Month during the great struggle for the preservation of our union. May the Erection of this Easel=Shaped Monument help us never to forget the Debt of gratitude we owe to the Brave Boys in Blue who on land and sea volunteered their services their services during the dark days of Rebellion, Suffering and Bloodshed which marked the years from 1861 to 1865. May we ever be willing to lend a helping hand to the soldiers Widows and orphans and to those who were rendered helpless while serving their country and may our motto ever be 'Liberty and Union Now and Forever, One and Inseparable.' Participated in the battles of Gettysburg, PA, July 3 rd 1863 and Falling Waters, J.W. July 14 th 1863 The Easel Monument Association Chicago Illinois"
