Abstract

The Bates Family papers document the family’s extensive history in Worcester County and Baltimore, Maryland through vital records of the Bates, Starr, Norris, and Murray families. The Bates family is also documented via court records, financial histories and photographs. Correspondingly, records also document the Methodist Protestant church in which the Bates family has been involved for decades; these include the correspondence and articles of Rev. Benjamin Alfred Dumm nephew of Rev. Laurence Webster Bates D.D. The materials date from 1873-1989 with the bulk of the material dating from 1893-1928.

Biographical History

Rev. Laurence Webster Bates D.D. (1819-1901) born in New Jersey, outside of Philadelphia, to Quaker parents who raised him with a deep faith. Rev. Bates at a young age was introduced to the Methodist faith and by the age of eleven, he had converted. By the time he was twelve, Rev. Bates had begun to host meetings and lead singing at the request of the church pastors. In 1840, Rev. Bates was received into the itinerancy in the Maryland Annual Conference and was first appointed as the assistant to Rev. Avra Melvin on the Snow Hill and Princess Anne circuit. He continued on to many charges across Maryland and Virginia until he was superannuated in 1900 after serving the Methodist Protestant church for 61 years. The title of Doctor of Divinity was conferred upon him in 1868 by the Gettysburg College of the Lutheran Church. Rev. Bates was married to Eliza M. Bates (1818-1893) and they had one child, Edward Bayley Bates (1846-1889).

Edward Bayley Bates was born in Virginia and completed a degree in Classical Course from the Peabody Institute and graduated with distinction. He married Emma Philippa Starr (1849-1880) and they had one child, Edward Bayley Bates, Jr. (b. 1879)

Edward Bayley Bates, Jr. attended McDaniel College graduating in 1898; he married Mary Elsie Norris (b. 1880) and had two children, Edward Norris Bates (1903-1993) and Laurence Murray Bates (1909-1997).

Rev. Benjamin Alfred Dumm (b. 1867) born in Salisbury, Maryland, he was the nephew of the Rev. Laurence Webster Bates D.D. who became a minister, scholar, and author. He received his Ph.D. in Philosophy from George Washington University in 1900, and preached in the Congregational Church in Plymouth, New Hampshire. Dr. Dumm was married to Nell Jamieson Dumm.
