Abstract

The papers of George B. Nabb, Jr. document his thoughts and experiences through correspondence during World War II from 1942-1945, with the bulk of the material dating from 1943-1944, while Nabb was stationed in England and in Northern France as the Captain and Commanding Officer of Company D of the 115th Infantry Division of the National Guard. Correspondence was sent to his wife Georgia and son, George, who lived on his family’s farm in Cambridge, Maryland, and focus on his thoughts and concerns about his family back home.

Biographical History

George Baggs Nabb, Jr., (1909-1989), was born in Cambridge, Maryland, to George Nabb, a farmer, and his wife Hattie. Nabb grew up on the family farm in North Yarmouth, by the village of Airey. He continued to live at home after graduating from Cambridge High School and became a farmer like his father. In 1929, he enlisted in the National Guard. He married Georgia Fleming in November 1938, and in 1940 they had his first son, George Nabb III.

Not long after the birth of his son, Nabb had to leave his family for active duty. For over a year he spent time in training in the United States. In September 1942, he received orders as Company Commander for his 29th Infantry Division to go over to England to fight in the war. Over the next few years, Nabb was stationed in several different locations in Europe; in fact, Nabb was the Captain and Commanding Officer of Company D of the 115th Infantry on D-Day. Nabb received a Purple Heart with a Bronze Star for injuries sustained during the war. In July 1945, Nabb returned to the United States and received a 30 day leave to be with his family. Afterward, he was stationed in Florida until he was relieved from active duty in February 1946.

Nabb finally returned home and continued to farm.  In April 1946, his wife had his second child, Carlton.  He raised his two sons, and they farmed their land together. Nabb passed the farming business on to his children when he retired in 1964, and remained on the farm until he passed away in 1989.
