Abstract

The Maryland DOVE records document the visit of the Maryland DOVE to Salisbury, Maryland. The materials date from 2001-2011 with the bulk of the material dating from the visit in 2011. The visit of the DOVE is documented via correspondence, newspaper clippings, advertisements, and photographs.

Administrative History

The Maryland DOVE is a working museum ship at the outdoor living history museum in Historic St. Mary’s City. The DOVE is a full-scale reproduction of a square-rigged merchant carrier from the first half of the 17th Century. She is named after the pinnace, DOVE, which carried supplies for the Maryland colonists in 1634. The DOVE was launched in 1978 and is owned by the State of Maryland and operated and maintained by Historic St. Mary’s City. The Wicomico Historical Society worked to bring the DOVE to Salisbury in 2001, 2003 and 2011.

Scope and Content Note

Series I: Printed Materials, 2001-2011: documents the planning of the visit of the DOVE to Salisbury and include correspondence, invoices, advertisements and newspaper clippings.

Series II: Visual Materials, 2001-2011: series includes photographs of the visit of the Maryland DOVE to Salisbury, Maryland.
