Abstract

The Salisbury City Council records document the internal functions of the council from 1983 – 1993 with the bulk of the material dating from, 1992 – 1993. Council records include meeting minutes and agendas pertaining to ordinances and proposals. These ordinances include environmental concerns, tax fees and planning and zoning concerns. Also found in the records are interoffice memorandums, financial records including budget briefings, annual reports, and correspondence. Correspondence includes complaints and requests for action from community members and invitations from various local organizations including neighborhood associations and the sheriff’s office and the Salisbury Zoo.

Administrative History

Two years after the formation of Wicomico County, Maryland in 1867 the city of Salisbury formed a Board of Commissioners to aide in the administration of the town. This board consisted of five commissioners and lasted until September 1887. In April 1888, Salisbury’s government changed with the implementation of a Mayor and City Council. This council acted as an elected continuation of the previous town commissioner’s board with several of the commissioners being reelected to the city council. The early focus of the council included the expansion and creation of roads, and the beautification of Salisbury. The city council continues to maintain a membership of five councilmembers and focus on the betterment of the city.
