Abstract

The ledger of shipping merchant, Robert Peacock documents the merchant voyages he invested in as well as the goods he traded and sold at his store in Oxford, Maryland, 1766-1778. Peacock had a pension for luxury wares including silver pieces, silk stockings, fabrics, wine, and rum; as noted in the ledger on multiple occasions, Peacock dealt in the trade of human cargo. On page 19, Peacock signs his own name, beneath the credit balance. At the back of the ledger are 29 pages of handwritten notations on the life of George Washington, from John Marshall's, "The Life of George Washington".

Biographical History

Robert Peacock was a known merchant and investor in Talbot County, Maryland. He was born circa 1732 in Shrewsbury Parish, Kent County, to Robert and Mary Peacock. He married Elizabeth Cooper around 1775. Peacock died around 1786, and during the 1790 census, his wife was noted as "Head of Household" retaining one free white female and five enslaved persons.
