Abstract

Sussex Co., Delaware Almshouse ledger documents goods including tobacco, clothing, blankets, and food purchased by the almshouse (poorhouse) overseer for the pauper(s) who were placed in the poorhouse, 1904-1907. In addition to the goods purchased by the county, this ledger notes the names and dates of the pauper's receiving goods and services by the almshouse.

Administrative History

The Sussex County, Delaware almshouse, or poorhouse were locations by which the poor or paupers were admited to rehabilitate themselves and seek employment. The almshouse(s) were run like a corporation/superintendency and managed by a supervisor who was appointed by county trustees. Supervisors could only admit a person if they had supporting paperwork. Proper documentation of the almshouse's acvities was required by the trustees.
