Abstract

Sarah M. Tarr Bonnet Maker Account Book, 1842-1850. Ledger details a wide variety of accounts for which Ms. Tarr made, altered, trimmed, lined and framed bonnets for an extensive female clientele utilizing a wide variety of fabrics including silk, bombazine, velvet and straw. Ms. Tarr also sold a variety of ladies notions including pins, thimbles, thread, lace and dry goods by the yard. To a lesser degree, Ms. Tarr also crafted men's and boys' caps. Also written in the ledger is the marital status of her clients and occupation. Lastly, Ms. Tarr noted transactions of her African American clients as well.
