The Old Home Prize Essay collection documents the contest submissions from both Somerset and Wicomico Counties, dating from 1932-2015, with a bulk of the material dating from 1970-1987. The essays cover a wide range of topics all of which focus on the Delmarva area. These topics include towns, houses and buildings, famous settlers, the Chesapeake Bay, and the Eastern Shore’s involvement in the Civil War.
The Old Home Prize Essay contest was established in 1909, offered to senior high school students taking advanced English classes in Somerset and Wicomico Counties. Essays focused on the Eastern Shore and its history. For example, at Crisfield High School the contest was called the Hogdson Old Home Prize Essay. The valedictorian of the senior class is chosen to write the essay and read it at graduation. At Washington High School it is known as the Duer McMaster Old Home Prize Essay. It is open to all senior English students on a volunteer basis. Members of the community are chosen to read the essays and choose the winner from the submissions.
Series I: Somerset County High Schools

Series III: Parkside High School (Wicomico County)
The Old Home Prize Essay collection has been arranged into three series, SOMERSET COUNTY, WICOMICO COUNTY and PARKSIDE HIGH SCHOOL. The Parkside High School series includes the essay contest winners from Parkside High School and are a later addition to the collection thus not further subdivided by topic and arranged by year of winning essay.
The first two series are further subdivided into nine subseries, Churches and Religion, Education, History, Towns and Communities, Maritime, Business and Occupations, People, Houses and Buildings, and Lifestyle. The Churches and Religion subseries documents the essays which focus on local churches or religious organizations. These submissions include essays on synagogues, Asbury United Methodist Church and Quakerism. The Education subseries documents essays focusing on topics relating to education, specific schools, the development of education and integration on the eastern shore. The History subseries documents essay submissions focused on the history of the eastern shore. These topics range from early colonial settlement, to local military history and slavery. The Towns and Communities subseries documents submissions which look at local communities including Princess Anne, Assateague, and Smith Island. The Maritime subseries documents essays focusing mainly on the Chesapeake Bay, though other submissions center on water transportation. The Business and Occupations subseries documents essays which focus on local businesses and industries including fishing and banking. The People subseries documents submissions whose focus is with well-known Eastern Shoremen and women including Patty Cannon, Fredrick Douglass and Joshua Thomas.
