Abstract

The Old School Baptist Church records consist of manuscript materials and periodicals documenting the faith and practices of the Old School Baptist Churches on the Delmarva Peninsula from 1701-2013, with the bulk of the records dating from 1875 to 1999. The collection includes meeting minutes of the Forest Grove, Little Creek, Broad Creek, Salisbury, Rewastico, Nassaongo, Snow Hill, Rock Springs, Indiantown, and Pitts Creek Old School Baptist Churches from 1799-2013. The collection also includes a complete run of Signs of the Times, the journal of the Old School Baptist faith, from 1875-1969.

Administrative History

The Old School Baptist churches, also called Hard Shell Baptists or Primitive Baptist churches, adopted the first century church’s doctrine and practice. The name “Primitive” or “Old School” was adopted after a disagreement arose in the 1820s and 30s in the Baptist sect over the use of Missionary Societies, Sunday Schools and Theological Seminaries. Up until that time, almost all Baptist churches were identical in faith and practices. The Primitive or Old School Baptists did not believe in the above practices, as they believed it was the church and the Bible that leads faith, not other overarching authorities. In the 20th century, membership declined, and many Old School Baptist churches closed or merged.

Scope and Content Note

The Old School Baptist Church Records contains letters, sermons, newsletters, photographs, books, meeting minutes, and financial reports from various Old School Baptist Churches from 1701-2013, with the bulk of the records dating from 1875-1999. These churches include Salisbury Old School Baptist Church and Association, Forest Grove Old School Baptist Church, Little Creek Old School Baptist Church, Snow Hill Old School Baptist Church, Broad Creek Old School Baptist Church, Indiantown Old School Baptist Church, Rock Springs Old School Baptist Church, and Nassaongo Old School Baptist Church. The series also includes issues of the Old School Baptist periodicals The Primitive Baptist Inquirer, The Remnant and The Predestinarian, as well as bound volumes of Signs of the Times from 1875-1969.

The Old School Baptist Church Records are arranged into two series:

Series I: Church Records and Information contains papers related to the operation of individual churches from 1799-2013. It includes record books, meeting minutes, letters, financial reports, and photographs from Salisbury Old School Baptist Church and Association, Forest Grove Old School Baptist Church, Little Creek Old School Baptist Church, Snow Hill Old School Baptist Church, Broad Creek Old School Baptist Church, Indiantown Old School Baptist Church, Rock Springs Old School Baptist Church, Nassaongo Old School Baptist Church, and various other Old School Baptist Churches.

Series II: Church Periodicals contains issues of Signs of the Times from 1875-1985, Old School Baptist Church Newsletters the Primitive Baptist Inquirer, The Remnant and The Predestinarian, and booklets from various Old School Baptist Churches
