Abstract

Timothy Beard papers document the life, family history, and life-long research of Sheffield, Massachusetts native, Timothy Field Beard, through numerous research notes, family photograph albums, memberships, and bibles. The papers date from 1729-2016, with the bulk of the papers dating from 1951-2001 reflecting on the core of his work, genealogy. Beard’s notes provide insight into numerous family lines other than his own and the membership rosters illustrate a collection of prominent lineages.

Biographical History

Sheffield, Massachusetts native, Timothy Field Beard (1930-2015) fostered his childhood fascination for his own family history throughout his life.  He received a B.A. in history from Williams College in 1953 and continued his genealogical work after serving as a First Lieutenant in the United States Air Force from 1954-1956.  In 1963, he married Annette Knowles Huddleston (1934-1995) of Tuskegee, Alabama.   Over the next few decades, he was director and chairman of the Minor Memorial Library and Hodge Memorial Library in Roxbury, Connecticut, published a genealogical finding guide, How to Find Your Family Roots, in 1977, and worked as a librarian in the Local History and Genealogical Division of the New York Public Library.  After his retirement from the New York Public Library in the early 1980s, he continued to reach out to historical organizations through correspondence, lectures, and research.  While he and Annette never had any children, the couple raised millions of dollars for historic houses, museums, and research projects.

Arrangement Statement

The Timothy Beard papers have been arranged into five series, PERSONAL PAPERS, RESEARCH PAPERS, VISUAL MATERIALS, ROSTERS AND DIRECTORIES, and FAMILY BIBLES. Personal Papers document the life of Timothy Beard outside of his genealogical work.  Research Papers include correspondences, journals, notes, wills, and a baby book providing information on the families he studied during his time as a genealogist, including his own relations.  Visual materials include photographs, slides, photograph albums, and scrapbooks, documenting Timothy Beard’s family tree.  Rosters and Directories document the many members of numerous societies in which Timothy Beard was involved.  Family Bibles document family lineage. 

Folders are listed by their location in each box; any given subject may be dispersed throughout the entirety of the collection.
