Abstract

The Waldo L. Dise papers document his career as a Methodist minister on the Delmarva Peninsula 1923-1970. The collection is comprised of sermons, church programs, marriage certificates and notes related to Waldo Dise’s pastoral work. Photographs and certificates document his collegiate experience, and his service as an Army Chaplin during World War II.

Biographical History

Waldo Lee Dise (1902-1984) was born in Tangier, Island, Virginia to Thomas and Martha Dise. Waldo attended Wesley Colligate Institute in Dover, Delaware, the day after graduation on June 14, 1923, he married Mary Adeline Tieman. He attended seminary at Evangelical Lutheran Church of the United States in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. In 1935, he was ordained by the Wilmington Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church. He was appointed pastor at Epworth United Methodist Church in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware.  In 1944, Rev. Waldo Dise graduated from the United States Armed Service Chaplin School at Harvard University. During World War II Rev. Dise served in the European Theatre. After returning home from the war, he served as a Methodist pastor throughout the Delmarva Peninsula until his retirement in 1968. Waldo and Mary Dise had two daughters Forrest and Kendall.
