Abstract

The papers of Edwin C.M. Dickey document his early life in Wicomico County, Maryland through his military career and ultimately his personal interests when he was a resident of the United States Soldiers Home in Washington D.C. The materials date from 1898-1963 with the bulk of the material 1921-1963 documenting his post-war life interests. Edwin traced his genealogical roots as far back as John Dickey of Chester County, Pennsylvania who had military ties with George Washington in the American Revolution. Edwin studied and wrote on a wide range of subjects including world and American history, philosophy, and science. Further, there is evidence within the papers that Edwin was an early 20th-century Free-Mason. Also included within the records are a series of scrapbooks, ledgers, correspondence, and photographs.

Biographical History

Colonel Edwin C.M. Dickey was born in Clara, Maryland on March 3, 1891, to Thomas and Sarah Jane Dickey and died in March of 1967.  Edwin completed elementary school in Clara, Maryland in 1906, and then grade school in Savage, Maryland in 1907.  World War I was Edwin’s first experience in the Navy. He trained as an electrical and mechanical engineer. During his service of the war, he met Ethel Long while she was working at a children’s hospital. They married on May 1, 1921, and had one child Edwin, Jr. Edwin moved to Philadelphia where he continued his work as an engineer.  On April 27, 1942, he reenlisted into the Navy during the United States involvement in World War II. While on defense-work in 1945, Edwin was involved in a serious car accident that almost claimed his life. The accident permanently disabled his leg. Edwin’s handicap ended his engineering career but allowed him to conduct genealogical research, author literary works, and create family scrapbooks. He spent the remainder of his life residing in the U.S. Soldiers Home in Washington D.C. for retired servicemen.

The Edwin Dickey papers have been arranged into four series: GENEALOGICAL RESEARCH, WRITINGS AND RESEARCH, CORRESPONDENCE AND LEDGERS, and ADDITIONAL MATERIAL.
