Abstract

The Arlene Goslee Knowles scrapbooks document the experience of a young woman coming of age during World War II, 1943-1949. The scrapbooks focus on religious and social events in Sharptown, Maryland; within the scrapbooks, there are birth, wedding, graduation and death announcements. The collection also conveys how an American woman during this period, engages and finds global interconnections. There is ephemera related to her brother, John Goslee’s service in World War II. Additionally, there is material related to relationships she developed with other Methodists in South East Asia. The scrapbooks contain church programs, newspapers, photographs, postcards and ephemera related to Arlene’s life.

Biographical History

Arlene Ellen Goslee Knowles (1929-1991) was born in Sharptown, Maryland.  She was educated in the Wicomico County school system and graduated from Mardela High School. Arlene was an active member of the Mt. Vernon United Methodist Church. As a young woman, she served as President of the Methodist Fellowship of Sharptown and Galestown, Maryland. Arlene attended both Salisbury State Teachers College and Western Maryland College. After completing her formal education she worked as an educator in the Wicomico County School system. Arlene was married to Thomas R. Knowles.
