The papers of the Levin H. Campbell family document the extensive family lineage of the Campbell, Hicks, Hooper, Goldsborough, Denwood, and Hollyday families of Dorchester and Talbot counties, Maryland. Records include handwritten family histories, newspaper clippings and comprehensive biographical information, original and facsimile, were acquired over the course of several decades by Hon. Levin H. Campbell, a direct descendent of Zacharias Campbell and date from 1777-2002. Of note, is a vital records diary begun in 1844 by Levin Hicks Campbell (1820-1868), which was maintained by family members through the 1940s. The diary also includes pages from the Campbell family Bible, and notes histories of Zacharias and his son, Levin.
The Campbell family of Cambridge, Dorchester County and Easton, Talbot County, Maryland, descend from Zacharias Campbell, a native of Glasgow, Scotland, who first immigrated to the Rappahannock River region of Virginia, and settled near Vienna on the Nanticoke River, in Dorchester County, in the 1760s. Zacharias married Mary Hicks in 1765, a descendent of Thomas Hicks, they had four daughters and one son, Levin Hicks Campbell, (1774-1819). When Levin, a lawyer who studied under U.S. Senator John Henry of Maryland, died suddenly in 1819, his wife Anna Maria was pregnant with a son, Levin Hicks Campbell (1820-1868). Levin Hicks Campbell, and his siblings became orphaned when their mother died in October of 1822. The three children were raised by their uncle and aunt, Samuel and Ariana Davis Chamberlaine at “Clora’s Point” on the Choptank River. He would marry, Mary P. Jones, and have several children, including Levin Hicks Campbell (1860-1955) and Milton Campbell (1862-1957). Son, Levin went on to read the law with Charles Gibson and Charles Baker; he was admitted to the Missouri bar in 1883. He married Virginia Hollyday (1864-1930) in 1884. Levin’s brother, Milton Campbell (1862-1957), graduated from the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy in 1883, and married the Elizabeth Groome Dawson (1862-1943), in 1887. By 1891, he became the President of H.K. Mulford Company, Philadelphia. Levin’s children, Lieut. Gen. Levin Hicks Campbell (1886-1976), served as the 16th Chief of Ordnance for the United States Army Ordinance Corps; he was married to Lucile Chapman Woods, (1890-1985), they had one daughter. Worthington D. Campbell (1890-1964), married Louise Steele Hooper Campbell (1894-1963). A patent attorney, he attended George Washington University, Pratt Institute, and the New York Law School, whereby he was admitted to the New York State bar in 1913. During World War I, he served as a captain in the Ordnance Department. He had two children, the Rev. Worthington D. Campbell, (1922-2004), and Levin H. Campbell (b. 1927), who graduated from Harvard College and Harvard Law School. Lee, as he is known, went on to serve as the First Assistant Attorney General of Massachusetts, and an associate justice of the Massachusetts Superior Court. In 1971, he was nominated by President Richard M. Nixon, and confirmed to the United States District Court for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. After a brief period, in 1972 he was then nominated again by President Nixon, and confirmed to the Unites States Court of Appeals for the First Circuit. He served as chief judge from 1983-1992, and assumed senior status in 1992, although he continued to hear cases for another 15 years. During his more than 40 years on the bench, Judge Campbell helped define some of the major legal and constitutional issues of his time. He married the former Eleanor Saltonstall Lewis in 1957; their union produced three children.
This collection documents the comprehensive family lineage of the Campbell family, Dorchester County, Maryland.
Series I: Family History Records, contain extensive family history pertaining to the lineage of Levin Hicks Campbell, son of Zacharias Campbell and his descendants. Documenting materials include hand-drawn family charts, and facsimiles of original records obtained by Judge Campbell.
Series II: Vital Records, contain the handwritten vital records diary begun in 1844 by Levin Hicks Campbell (1820-1868), as well as additional pages removed from the diary and the Campbell family Bible. After the death of Mr. Campbell, family members continued to add birth, marriage and death records to the diary until the mid-1940s. The records in this series are itemized due to their preservation and to maintain the original order in which they were removed from the Diary.
The papers of the Campbell family have been arranged into two series, FAMILY HISTORY RECORDS and VITAL RECORDS. The records were mostly maintained in the order in which they were received from the donor. This arrangement reflects the associated family histories, as well as those included who are tangential to the Campbell family.
Folders are listed by their location in each box; any given subject may be dispersed throughout the entirety of the collection.
