Abstract

The Ellen G. Bloodsworth papers document her educational history at Wicomico High School and Salisbury State Normal School, as well as her interest in Eastern Shore history and her Episcopal faith from 1923-2007. Her papers are represented through graduation and university scrapbooks, high school reunion ephemera, newsletters from Episcopal churches, and newspaper clippings about Maryland’s Eastern Shore.

Biographical History

Ellen G. Bloodsworth (December 28, 1915-June 21, 2016) was born Elizabeth Ellen Grieg in Clifton, Virginia. She moved to Salisbury as a young child and later attended Wicomico High School. She graduated at the top of her class in 1933 and went on to study at Salisbury State Normal School where she received her degree for Early Childhood education. She married Louis Edward LeBel in 1937. Throughout her early married life, Ellen lived in Brazil with Louis LeBel before moving back to Salisbury due to World War II. During the war, she worked at Peninsula Regional Medical Center’s Red Cross division and began raising her children, Louis Edward Jr., Elena, and Philip, on her own after the stress of the war caused her marriage to dissolve. After the war, she worked at the Rubberset Company for several years until she received a position as an Employment Counselor for the Maryland State Department of Employment Security. As a counselor, Ellen worked with dozens of children on the Eastern Shore until her retirement in 1977. Ellen married Lee Gordy of Hebron in 1966. Throughout her life, Ellen was a devoted member of both the St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in Salisbury and St. Philip’s Episcopal Church in Quantico. She revived a forgotten Sunday School Program while at St. Philip’s and revived their church choir. When Lee passed away in 1990, she renewed a friendship with Charles A. Bloodsworth and they were married in 1991. The couple lived together happily in the house Ellen grew up in on Philadelphia Avenue, until they moved to Harbor Pointe Assisted Living where they remained until Charles passed in 2014.
