Abstract

The Clarence W. Whealton papers document his bank transactions, his income from his law practice and his personal investments in Wicomico County, Md., Sussex County, De. and Accomack County, Va. between 1920 and 1929 through a ledger. They also document his Lions Club membership and the grammar school education of Daniel J. Whealton II in Salisbury, Md. through certificates.

Biographical History

Born November 7, 1887 in Chincoteague, Virginia, Clarence W. Whealton was the son of Daniel J. Whealton (1854-1925), a merchant and banker. He was educated at Swarthmore Prep School, Western Maryland College and the University of Virginia. He was admitted to the Virginia bar in 1915, and served as a 2nd Lieutenant in the Marine Corps during World War I. He married Dorothy Sudler and the couple had two daughters, Dorothy and Elizabeth, and a son, Daniel. Whealton was elected to the Maryland House of Delegates in 1926, and appointed to the Maryland Aviation Commission in 1929. He served for three years as Governor of District 22 (Maryland, Delaware, and Washington, D.C.) of the International Association of Lions Clubs. Mr. Whealton died in Wicomico County, Maryland on August 14, 1935.

Born December 28, 1922, Daniel J. Whealton II was the son of Clarence W. Whealton. He was educated at Mrs. Herold’s School in Salisbury, Maryland and attended the University of Virginia. He enlisted in the Army Air Corps and served as a nose gunner on a B-17 bomber in the 524th Squadron, 379th Bomb Group, Eighth Air Force during World War II. He received four Bronze Stars and the Distinguished Flying Cross for heroism. Mr. Whealton later worked for the Department of Defense and died in Salisbury, Maryland on October 11, 2005.
