Abstract

The Freeny family papers document the life of Lula Belle Freeny and the life accomplishments of her many family members and friends including Susan “Addie” Freeny, Munsey White, and Bessie Luffman in Hebron, Wicomico County, Maryland, 1889-1970 with the bulk of the material dating from 1908-1948. Personal and professional activities of their lives are documented through a series correspondences, military documents, education materials, photographs, and various other booklets that the family had acquired over the years.

Biographical History

The Freeny Family resided in Hebron, Wicomico County, Maryland during a majority of the twentieth century. Lula Belle Freeny (1901-1991) was the first child of Earnest Freeny (1868-1951) and Susan “Addie” White Freeny (1868- 1953), as well as the niece of World War I veteran Munsey White (1886-1945). After Lula Belle completed her primary schooling, she would go on to Western College of Maryland, where she would receive her teaching certification in 1920. She then would marry Louis Brumbley in 1924 and move her family to Quantico, Maryland. Lula and Louis would go on to have five children: Martha, Thelma, Mary Jane, Ralph, and William. Throughout her life, Lula was a longstanding member of the United Zion Methodist Church, the Mor-Zion Homemakers, and the Wicomico Happy Timers.
