The Grace Atkinson Morris papers document her genealogical research on families from the Eastern Shore of Maryland with materials dating from 1832-1992, with the bulk of the materials dating from 1979-1992. The papers identify the genealogical connections between the Atkinson, Riggin, Miller, and Trehearne families of Maryland and Virginia’s Eastern Shore. Documents within the collection include Grace’s handwritten notes, her correspondence with genealogists and relatives, Atkinson family ledgers, and family photographs.
Lillie Grace Atkinson Morris, (1906-1997), Grace as she was known, was born in Princess Anne, Maryland to Levin James Miller Atkinson (1849-1969) and Lillie Belle Riggin Atkinson (1868-1908). Grace graduated from Wicomico High School in 1925 and in her spare time, traced her genealogical history. Grace married Maryland resident, James “Jimmy” Morris (1908-1973) in the 1930s and had one child together, Anna Lee Morris (b. 1935).
The Grace Atkinson Morris papers have been arranged into six series: COUNTIES, 1672-1994, NEWSLETTERS, RESEARCH NOTES, RECORDS, CORRESPONDENCE, and BOOKS.
Counties, 1672-1994 series documents research done on families in different counties throughout Delmarva. It is further divided into five subseries, Accomack, Northampton, Somerset, Worcester, and Articles. Accomack subseries documents the Milby and Davis families of Accomack County, Virginia. Northampton subseries documents the Colonna family and records from Northampton County, Virginia in the 1800s. Somerset subseries documents several families of Somerset County, Maryland, such as the Miller, Atkinson, and Latchum families. Documents include photocopies of records and handwritten notes by Grace Morris. Worcester subseries documents the Riggin and Trehearne families. Documents include photocopies of records and handwritten notes by Grace Morris. Articles subseries documents newspaper articles related to genealogy on the Delmarva.
Newsletter series documents genealogical newspapers Grace Morris wrote articles for, such as the Maryland Genealogical Society newsletter and the Lower Delmarva Genealogical Society newsletter. Other newsletters within the series include the Treherne Journal and the Old Somerset.
Research Notes series documents the notes taken by Grace Morris while she was researching genealogy. Documents within the series contain handwritten marriage license lists and notes regarding different family members and possible connections.
Correspondence series documents the correspondence Grace Morris held with several genealogists and relatives from across the continental United States. Correspondence with genealogists includes Leslie P. Dryden, Ruth Dryden, and Matthew M. Wise. Correspondence with discovered relatives includes Paul Morris, Virginia Chatelain, Anne E. Gill, and Robert Trehearne.
