Abstract

These four postcards edited by A. Ternois depict Poulbot style children affected by the First World War in France, circa 1917.

Biographical History

Francisque Poulbot was born February 6, 1879 in Saint – Denis, France. Poulbot’s parents were lecturers and he was the eldest of their seven children. Poulbot was an illustrator, draughtsman, painter, toy maker, and writer.  

Francisque moved to Montmartre, a district of Paris, where he married Leona Ondernard in 1914. Later that year, Poulbot was sent to the front as the first world war broke out in Europe. He was injured in February 1915, and it was discovered that Poulbot had a condition that disqualified him for service and he was sent home. Poulbot continued to contribute to the war effort through art, creating patriotic posters and postcards which landed him under house arrest during the German occupation of France.

Francisque Poulbot died on September 16, 1946 at the age of 67. He is buried in the Montmartre Cemetery in Paris.

Scope and Content Note

These four postcards edited by A. Ternois depict Poulbot style children affected by the First World War in France, circa 1917. One of the postcards, depicting children vandalizing a wall, has the group standing below the patriotic “Vive La France.”  

Poulbot style refers to illustrations of “street children.” Poulbot’s popular “Children of Montmarte” series depicted needy children who occupied the Hill of Montmartre.
