Abstract

This account book was kept by Nathaniel Rogers Farley of Rowley, Massachusetts in 1827 and documents his trade as a cobbler in the putting out system. While the entries in the ledger primarily pertain to the sale of shoes and boots, other entries include commodities such as bushels of corn and potatoes, gallons of rum, tons of hay, cords of wood, pounds of tea and coffee, calico cloth, and pecks of lime.

Biographical History

Nathaniel Rogers Farley was born on February 3, 1783 in Ipswich, Massachusetts. He was the second child of Jabez Farley (1754 – 1836) and Lucy Rogers Farley (1759 – 1788).

On August 3, 1810, Nathanial married Sarah Pearson Farley (1787 – 1878). The couple had three children together; Lucy Rogers Farley (1812 – 1894), Nathaniel Rogers Farley ll (1814 – 1897), and Sarah Farley (1817 – 1878).

Nathaniel died on August 15, 1857 at the age of 74. He is buried in Highland Cemetery in his hometown of Ipswich.

 

Scope and Content Note

This account book was kept by Nathaniel Rogers Farley of Rowley, Massachusetts in 1827 and documents his trade as a cobbler in the putting out system. While the entries in the ledger primarily pertain to the sale of shoes and boots, other entries include commodities such as bushels of corn and potatoes, gallons of rum, tons of hay, cords of wood, pounds of tea and coffee, calico cloth, and pecks of lime.

The book contains 36 pages worth of records ranging from January to October 1827. Farley also kept records of loans and repayments. The account book provides some insight on the economics of a small town in Massachusetts.
