Abstract

This carte de visite photograph of an African American man, who was possibly a freedman, was taken after the American Civil War in the 1860s in Richmond, Virginia. The photograph was taken at the Lee Gallery on Main Street, which was named after Robert E. Lee and originally featured his face on the studio's logo.
