Abstract

The Piney Point Community League was established in St. Mary's County, Maryland in 1918 for the "Benefit of Colored People." The League's work included the establishment of the benefit organization known as the "Good Hope Home League" in 1919, formation of an industrial school for African Americans, creation of structured home school programs, and disbursement of sick and death insurance benefits. This ledger documents the League's work through meeting minutes, member rolls (with officer names), accounts for charities and the industrial colored school, accounts of sick benefits and deaths, and League laws. Also included are loose notes regarding attendance and dues that were likely originally inside the ledger. The transcribed ledger is attached.
