The Frank Dunbaugh Papers document the activity of a Major in the United States Army immediately following the Second World War. Dunbaugh commanded the Allied Military Government (AMG) in the Hersbruck district of post-war Germany. He discussed how his unit identified former Nazi party members, the interrogation of S.S. officers at a castle, a riot in a Polish refugee camp, the mistreatment of civilians and rape of women, American soldiers being ambushed, American G.I.'s mistreating local civilians and German police, encounters with Russian officers, and meeting concentration and labor camp survivors.

Frank Montgomery Dunbaugh Jr. was born on September 13, 1895 to Frank Montgomery Dunbaugh Sr. and Sallie Etta Bennett in Pueblo, Colorado. Dunbaugh’s father founded the Colonial Navigation Company that sailed the Colonial Line.

By 1905, Dunbaugh’s family had relocated to Mount Vernon, Westchester, New York. Frank graduated from Yale College in 1917 with High Orations. In 1917, Frank was drafted into the Army after being a candidate at the Officer Training Camp at Camp Upton, New York. Dunbaugh served in both World War I and World War II. He was later a part of the Military Government stationed in Hersbruck, Bavaria after the conclusion of World War II. After leaving the military, Frank became an Assistant Professor of Marketing at the University of Miami. He also became a Rotarian and wrote for The Rotarian on three different occasions, one of which detailed some of his experiences in Hersbruck. Between 1952 and 1960, Frank and Alice made at least 4 trips abroad.

He married Laura Lane on February 16, 1926. The couple had two children: Frank Montgomery III and Edwin L. After divorcing Laura, he married Alice Brelford on August 20, 1938. Dunbaugh’s second marriage brought Brelford’s two daughters and son into Dunbaugh’s household. By 1945, Frank and Alice had moved to Dade, Florida, where he continued to reside until his death. Dunbaugh died on March 24, 1976 at age 80.

The papers consist of four series: Diary, Correspondence, Weekly Military Government Reports, and Ephemera. Dunbaugh's diary consists of 80 pages written between May and September 1945, which describe his experiences in detail. He discussed how his unit identified former Nazi party members, the interrogation of S.S. officers at a castle, a riot in a Polish refugee camp, the mistreatment of civilians and rape of women, American soldiers being ambushed, American G.I.'s mistreating local civilians and German police, encounters with Russian officers, and meeting concentration and labor camp survivors. Dunbaugh's correspondence contains one command from General Patton, as well as several letters from Hersbruck civilians such as a priest and a former Nazi party member. Weekly military government reports were marked confidential and include information about subjects like the civil administration, political, public relations and safety, press and radio, legal and prisons, finance and property control, public health, refugees, civilian supplies, trade and industry, and education and religion. Dunbaugh's ephemera includes his honorable discharge certificate for the First World War, his cancelled identification card with photograph, a speech from the landrat, and a list from the landrat's advisory committee.
