Abstract

The Diary of Alta Lebo includes daily entries for the year 1934 when Lebo was around 18 years old. Lebo, who lived in Macon County, Illinois, discussed school, church, movies, parties, books, chores, and the time that she wrote her entries, in addition to the times of various daily activities.

Biographical History

Alta Jeannette Lebo Mowerr was born in Macon County, Illinois on February 22, 1915 to Chester Owen Lebo (1891 – 1990) and Nettie May March Lebo (1887 – 1979). She was the second of three children; her older sister, Lillian Juanita was born in 1913, and her younger brother Owen Travis, was born in 1917.

Alta graduated from the Brokaw Hospital School of Nursing. She served in the Navy during WW2. After her service she spent forty years in several hospitals all across the country. She married George Mowerr (b. 1911), a veteran of the United States Marine Corps, on February 15, 1942. The two had one child, Georgia Anna Mowerr, born later that year. Georgia died in a car accident on June 25, 1960 at the age of 17.  

Alta and George retired in Vista, California but traveled frequently overseas and around the United States until George’s death in 1979. Widowed, Alta returned to Illinois to be near her family.

Alta Mowerr died on January 19, 2009 at the age of 93. She is buried in South Macon Township Cemetery.
