In 1994, former Salisbury University student Jeffrey Janiszewski collected folk material. The student investigated about the role played by women during the Civil War. He collected most of these information from books, some of which take the form of narratives. In this paper, he relays the story of several women including the Northerner spy Emma Edmonds who dressed as an African-American male to infiltrate the Confederate lines. Anna Ella Carroll's political contributions and the enlisted soldier Sarah Rosetta Wakeman. He also talks about the battle of Southern women against food shortage.
