In 1993, former Salisbury University student John Ruby collected folk material. This piece is a personal narrative. It tells the story of a young man and his "crowd". They liked satanic heavy metal rock and roll, which influenced their behaviors greatly and got them in a lot of trouble. Unlike his friends who pretended to follow the movement to look tough, John was being serious about killing people. At times, he was even convinced that the devil was in his closet. He also had a problem with alcohol but his friend's mental breakdown opened his eyes. One of his friend wanted to commit suicide and John played a major role in having him get a psychiatric treatment. From then on, he got sober and his group eventually parted from him.Al A cassette of Metallica's album "Master of Puppets" is enclosed.
Folklife Collection - Folklore Fieldwork Project of Hip-Hop / Rap Fans

In 1992, former Salisbury University student W. Wirt Wolfe, III collected folk material. He conducted a fieldwork to study the customs and traditions of the folk group of hip-hop and rap fans. The first part of his paper retraces the history of hip-hop music. Then it attempts to portray what a hip-hop fan is by exploring the different aspects that distinguish this group such as fashion, attitudes, communication and more. Wirt interviewed several peers to supplement his analysis.

In 1993, Salisbury University students were required to collect local folk material for their English class. Intrigued by the success of the Grateful Dead, Suzanne Pfuhl chose to investigate this band to understand why they could possibly appeal to people. She discovered that it had a lot to do with the band's philosophy of celebrating life, spreading happiness and interacting with their fans. Her discussions with several "Dead Heads" helped her understand and assess the attitudes of these fans.

In a series of interviews of local Eastern Shore residents in 1995, Salisbury University students and teachers collected folk life material. For this project, Gina Marie Adamo collected religious folklore, specifically the Catholic church music. She interviewed two parishoners at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church, in Salisbury, Md., who were both involved in the music ministries. Her paper analyzes the changes in the Catholic church and its music throughout the years. For instance, it tells us about how music was used to appeal to young people and to unify its community. Interview transcript and audiotape enclosed.
