Doctor's Journal of H.B. Mathiot

This medical journal was written between 1839 and 1891 by H.B. Mathiot, a physician who lived in Fayette county, Pennsylvania. Included are notes on anatomy, recipes for medicine, lists of patients (races noted), and recording of births. Mathiot studied medicine in Newark, Ohio from 1837 to 1840 and began practicing in Smithfield, Pennsylvania afterwards. He eventually graduated from Jefferson Medical College in 1852. Mathiot was also ordained as a minister of the Methodist Episcopal church in 1872; there is a list of people whom he married. The transcribed journal is attached.

This collection of photographs documents several aspects of life in and around Salisbury, Maryland including employment at the Wayne Dresser Factory, firemen extinguishing a downtown blaze and the aftermath of a devastating flood. Various photographs of boating, buildings and nature are also included. Photography club newsletters and a Salisbury Camera Club anniversary program can be found in the Printed Material Series. The dates associated with the photographs are not clearly known, however, can most likely be attributed to the 1950’s and 1960’s.

Joe Long was an American athlete, soldier, railroad worker, and politician born in 1921 in Delmar, Maryland. The Joe Long collection contains material compiled by Joe Long and his wife Mabel, who acted his campaign manager during campaigns. Materials included are newspapers, government bills, speeches, cards, letters, books, scrapbooks, and photographs compiled and saved by the Longs since the late 1930's.

The Kent Griffith Collection consists of extensive documentation of railways on and near Delmarva, including (but not limited to) the Eastern Shore Railroad, Pennsylvania Railroad, and New York, Pennsylvania, and Norfolk Railroad from the 1800s to the 1990s. While the collection includes Griffith's research notes and correspondence, as well as photographs he took and collected, the railroad memorabilia that Griffith collected was thorough and diverse. These documents include pass cards, time tables, employee timebooks, papers from a railroad employee TC Hurst, a scrapbook with hundreds of early 20th century Pennsylvania Railroad technical and safety memos, shipping and freight tags and receipts, detailed track charts and maps, and more.

Ledger of E.C. Kinnear

This ledger was kept by E.C. Kinnear, a shoe maker in Farmington, New Hampshire, from 1865 to 1866. Kinnear's accounts included "Francis Dane & Co.," one of Boston's leading 19th century shoe makers. Category headings included "Factory Balance Sheet," "Account Stock" (for the sole leather, uppers, and 'handmade of workmen' departments), "Stock Sold" including boxes, split pieces, sheep skin, pounds of wax, shoes, buckles, and soles, and "Factory" expenses such as trucking, freight, zinc nails for shoe making, blacking material, twine balls and pounds of twine, knives, knife blades, sawing and fitting wood, stitching machine, stuffings, stencil plates, work on sole leather tub, iron for heel fitting, and stools. Several factory worker's names are listed, along with weeks worked and jobs performed ("bottoming loafers," "binding loafers," "riveting shoes," or "riveting uppers").
Magician's Notebook

The notebook explains how certain magic tricks are performed, although some of the explanations are in shorthand. Published booklets include Learn to Entertain with Unique Master Magic, DeLand's Old Phantom Card Trick, and Fred Morphet's catalog of trick books.
Memoir of William Vaux

The Memoir of William Vaux was written in 1894 and recounts the life of the Doylestown, Pennsylvania man who was born in Philadelphia to British immigrants in 1825. The memoir covers his early family life, being sent out to work for Quaker farmers in the country at age seven, his teenage years working for farmers and learning the shoe making trade. He was an entrepreneur and described his businesses, houses and other buildings he bought and sold, his financial hardship in the 1870s. He also joined the home guard during Robert E. Lee's invasion at Gettysburg in 1863, though he did not see combat.
