Folklife Collection - Pennsylavnia Dutch Powwowing
by Salisbury University Students (Undated)
1 folder (0.1 linear feet)
In 1993, former Salisbury University student Justin Morris collected folk material. This collection focuses on Powwowing or the Pennsylvania Dutch approach to folk medicine using magic and faith healing to cure diseases. This paper describes the common practices used by powwow doctors (amulets, chants, herbs, etc.) and provides examples of incantations. It is noteworthy to mention that, according to the main informant Ruth Krieble, these incantation had a poetic rhyme but this characteristic was lost when they were translated from German.
