Alvin and Dorothy Piegols Papers

The Alvin and Dorothy Piegols papers document the experiences of Alvin Piegols as he served in the Army during World War II and of his fiancée, Dorothy Cannon, who was studying to be a nurse at the University of Michigan School of Nursing. The materials date between 1939 and 1947. Items in the collection include "the Scalpel" yearbook, correspondence between Dorothy and Alvin, newspapers, photographs from Alvin's tour in Europe, postcards of German towns, programs and pamphlets, publications about Alvin's battalion, the Thunderbolts, and artifacts such as Alvin's military patches, German pins, a Nazi flag, and a wooden crucifix.

Lieutenant Colonel Edward Henry Bowes Collection

The Lieutenant Colonel Edward H. Bowes Collection documents the personal history of Lieutenant Colonel Edward Henry Bowes (1896-1944). Personal items relating to Edward Bowes’ career in the U.S. Army from 1919 to 1944 include diaries, photographs, and other service-related documents. Bowes’ wife Roselmer Bowes (nee McKee) and two children lived primarily in New York and San Francisco, California and are documented through photographs and other documents. Bowes was a prisoner of war (POW) in a Philippine Military Prison Camp during World War II and later died after his prisoner vessel was sunk. There are also two yearbooks, a photo album, a birth certificate of Roselmer Bowes (nee McKee), a handbook meant for cadets about the West Point Military Academy, and a copy of a telegram and record detailing Bowes’ death.

Luis Alaniz Collection

The Luis Alaniz collection consists of the personal scrapbooks, diaries, photographs, and military memorabilia of World War Two veteran Luis Alaniz. Born October 28, 1922 in Dallas, Texas, Alaniz enlisted in the United States Army on September 10, 1940. He was initially a Medical Technician, promoted to Private on May 25, 1941 and later Corporal on July 16, 1942, but was later a technician in the 755th Railway Shop Battalion. Alaniz was sent to Europe (France and Belgium) on December 5, 1943 and returned on October 5, 1945. He later worked for the New Mexico National Guard, United States Air Force in Sandia Base, and was part of the International Chemical Workers Union in Los Angeles, California.

Major George W. Fisk Papers

The Major George W. Fisk papers document Fisk's experiences as a Major during World War II. The materials range from 1938 to 1946. Within the collection are photographs of Major Fisk and the Division Staff of the 2nd Infantry Division, a map of Western Europe with his route marked, a typed memoir, two books about the 2nd Infantry Division, two stamp albums for the purchase of war bonds, Maj. Fisk's uniform jacket and pants, and Maj. Fisk's wool army blanket.

Records of the German Club and German Study Abroad Programs

The Records of the German Club and German Study Abroad Programs collection documents the history of the German Club at Salisbury University and two study abroad programs offered by the Modern Languages Department between 1980 and 2015. Included in the collection are flyers, photographs, scrapbooks, video recordings, press releases, administrative forms, notes and correspondence among other materials created by Salisbury University (previously Salisbury State College and Salisbury State University) students and the advisor of German Club, Klaudia Thompson. Two events, Oktoberfest and Immersion Weekend, are the main focus of the German Club records. In addition, there are programs, posters, itineraries, travel guides and brochures, advertisements for the program, and postcards from abroad that document a winter study abroad program and a summer study abroad program. There are additional materials related to the Modern Languages Department itself, mostly regarding German courses and events, that include correspondence and publications by or about the Department. Lastly, there is a large collection of photographs and scrapbooks documenting events held by the German Club and the study abroad trips.

Travel Diary of Mildred Greve

This travel diary was written by Mildred Greve of Broome County, New York between 1957. The diary, which contains daily entries and accounts of expenditures, documents three trips abroad with her husband, James. The couple flew out of New York in 1957 for their first trip, which included a stop in Ireland and extensive stays in the villages and cities of Scandinavian countries like Denmark, Norway, Finland, and Sweden. In 1958 they took their second trip to Europe, this time to Belgium where they attended the Brussels Exposition of 1958. After Belgium the Greves stayed in the Netherlands, Germany, Austria, Italy, Switzerland, and returned to Brussels for their return flight to America. The third trip was a road trip up the St. Lawrence Seaway in Canada. There is one letter from July 15, 1958 as well as a newspaper clipping about visiting Finland.
