A Letter from the Dean of Libraries & Instructional Resources

Dear colleagues,

As part of our annual review of electronic resources, and in response to University-wide budget reductions, SU Libraries has made the difficult to decision to cancel selected database subscriptions. These cancellation decisions were based on evidence of usage as well as consideration of duplication of content. In many instances “abstracting and indexing” databases that have strong name-brand recognition in disciplines were discovered to have significant overlap in full-text content in existing multidisciplinary databases. It is with this in mind that we made evidence-based decisions to cut where changes would have the least amount of impact on availability of content – but that may require building new habits of where to begin a search. In the table below, the left column reflects databases that have been cancelled for the 2025 academic year. The right column lists databases with duplicated content.

In those instances where content is no longer available locally, we will continue to provide access through Interlibrary Loan.

We recognize that these changes may impact your work, and we are committed to helping you navigate this transition. If you would like to discuss specific cancellations in your subject area and explore alternative resources that can support teaching and research in your area, I encourage you to reach out directly to your liaison librarian.

If you wish to learn more about the SU Libraries' approach to this decision-making, Joan Ruelle, Dean of Libraries & Instructional Resources, will welcome the opportunity to meet directly to answer your questions.

Thank you for your understanding and continued partnership as we work to steward our institutional resources responsibly,

Joan Ruelle
