Campus Elementary School and Caruthers Hall: 1953-2014
After much planning, a location for the new building was set—across Red Square from where Blackwell Library stands. This, however, required the demolition of Caruthers Hall, which was built in 1953 as the Campus Elementary School. From 1925 to 1968, the campus school was considered a laboratory for student teachers, a movement that reached its hey-day in the 1950s. After the elementary school’s closure in 1968, the building which was named after founding faculty member, T.J.Caruthers—was used by the education department and later the Perdue School of Business. Now, in its place, stands a hub for higher education—the Guerrieri Academic Commons.
