Abstract

The papers of C. Ercell Wimbrow document his experience as a member of the Wicomico High School football squad, and the subsequent class of 1917 reunion through a series of photographs, and newspaper clippings. Additional information about Mr. Wimbrow’s life as a resident of Salisbury, Maryland includes correspondence and invoices from the Wimbrow Company as well as photographic images, receipts and newspaper clippings, 1906-1968, 1997.

Biographical History

Charles Ercell Wimbrow was born on October 6, 1899, in Salisbury, Maryland to John M. and Eliza Parsons Wimbrow. He was educated at Wicomico High School and played football. He married Charlotte Figgs and the couple had four daughters, Natalie Macmillan, Beverly Bounds, Charlotte Smullen, and Barbara White. A son, C. Ercell Wimborw, Jr. died as an infant. Wimbrow worked as a secretary for the Jackson Bros. Co. lumber mill and owned and operated the C. Ercell Wimbrow machine shop and the Wimbrow Company, a direct mail and stationery company. He was active in civic life. For 70 years, he was a member of Wicomico Lodge 91 of the Ancient Free and Accepted Masons. He was also a member of the Salisbury Lions Club; the Salisbury Lodge 817 of the B.P.O. Elks; the Eastern Sho’ Forest 53 of the Tall Cedars of Lebanon; and the Bethesda United Methodist Church. Wimbrow died in Salisbury, Md. on February 9, 1993.

The collection documents the business, civic and personal life of C. Ercell Wimbrow from 1906 - 1997, with the bulk of the collection from 1914-1940. The collection offers insight into high school football and small business in Wicomico County, Md.
